The Dallas Cowboys have officially added veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, TX, who indicated he had discussions with the team before training camp began. Entering his 15th NFL season, Miller is expected to strengthen the Cowboys' defense, particularly in pass protection, with a notable total of 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's arrival intensifies competition at the edge rusher position, potentially threatening the roster spots of several players. He is anticipated to primarily play as a left outside linebacker, a role that will be filled under defensive coordinator Christian Parker during critical passing situations.
Currently, Rashan Gary, acquired in a trade this spring, holds the starting left outside linebacker position, while rookie Malachi Lawrence is also training there.
On the right side, second-year player Donovan Ezeiruaku is expected to take on the right outside linebacker role, with James Houston serving as a key rotational player. This situation creates limited chances for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same position and need to prove their worth to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
Liufau may particularly possess trade value due to his potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. Additionally, the Cowboys are considering other players such as Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for promising candidates. The full implications of Miller's signing on roster adjustments remain to be seen.
