No. 13 Texas Tech is 3-0 after a 28-26 victory over No. 22 Houston, giving the Red Raiders a 1-0 conference record. Houston had a chance to score late near the goal line, but Texas Tech stopped quarterback Conner Weigman and the Cougars.
The Red Raiders trailed 10-0 before recovering from early struggles on both sides of the ball. After halftime, Texas Tech’s defense improved despite several long Houston drives. Adam Trick recorded two sacks, while Trey White and returning All-American A.J. Holmes Jr. had one each. White, who joined the team from San Diego State after a knee injury, played in his first game for Texas Tech.
Defensive back Brenden Jordan also returned after missing the opening two games because of an internal rules violation. Coach Joey McGuire said both players made major contributions as Texas Tech replaces multiple defensive starters who went to the NFL. McGuire said White was not fully healthy and may have played more than expected.
He said the defense is “still finding ourselves” and responded, “Give me two more games,” when asked whether it could match the 2025 unit.
Texas Tech will face Sam Houston next week in its final nonconference game. The team will have an additional recovery day after its Friday-night matchup with Houston.
