In the Texas race for U.S. Senate, both candidates have presented their strategies aimed at improving affordability for residents. Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee and current attorney general, released his plan titled Protecting the Texas Promise. His proposal includes various federal tax deductions, such as a $25,000 deduction for out-of-pocket medical expenses, an additional $25,000 per dependent, and a $50,000 deduction for first-time homebuyers.
On the other hand, James Talarico, the Democratic nominee and a state representative, introduced his plan called the New American Dream. Talarico's approach focuses on wages and debt relief rather than new tax deductions. He aims to repeal tax breaks for the wealthiest earners and proposes universal childcare, raising the minimum wage, and canceling medical debt.
Princeton, located about 33 miles northeast of Dallas, is among the areas that could be impacted by these proposals. The candidates' differing views on addressing affordability highlight the broader economic concerns facing Texas residents. Polling data shows Talarico leading Paxton by a narrow margin, but both plans require congressional approval to be enacted.
