Texas shoppers will have a three-day sales tax break from Friday, Aug. 7, through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9, on eligible back-to-school purchases, the state comptroller’s office says.
The exemption covers qualifying apparel, footwear, backpacks and school supplies when each item is priced below $100. It applies per eligible item, and the comptroller’s office says there is no cap on how many qualifying products a shopper may purchase.
Items can qualify when bought during the holiday from a retailer in Texas, or from an internet or catalog seller that does business in Texas. Purchases made outside the Aug. 7-9 window are not eligible, and the comptroller’s office says shoppers cannot receive a refund of sales tax for items bought before or after the holiday.
Some purchases are excluded. Computers, software and textbooks do not qualify, and the exemption also does not cover accessories such as jewelry, handbags, purses, briefcases, luggage, umbrellas, wallets and watches.
Seller charges for delivery, shipping, handling and transportation count toward an item’s sales price. If a seller uses one flat delivery fee for a package, regardless of the number of items inside, that full charge may be assigned to any single item in the package.
