McKinney City Council members are scheduled to receive a presentation from city staff regarding proposed infrastructure improvements along the State Highway 5 corridor. The update is set to take place during a work session on July 7 at 3 p.m. at McKinney City Hall, located at 401 E. Virginia St. The meetings will be available for livestreaming for residents who cannot attend in person. McKinney is about 7 miles west of Princeton.

According to city documents, plans are currently in the design phase to reconstruct and widen State Highway 5. The project aims to transform the roadway into a divided four-lane road stretching between McMakin Street and Power House Street. The Texas Department of Transportation is expected to begin construction on the main roadway in late 2027 or early 2028.

In addition to the primary roadway reconstruction, the city is contributing funds for supplementary enhancements along the corridor. These additions include median-mounted roadway lighting and dedicated turn lanes. City staff is also planning an enhanced at-grade crossing located between East Virginia Street and East Louisiana Street.

The push for these additional improvements follows a decision by council members in September 2025 to redirect efforts after the loss of $15 million in federal funding. That funding had been designated for the Lower 5 Plaza project, which originally planned for a ground-level bridge and a park extending underneath State Highway 5. During the September 2025 meeting, council members voted on a resolution to shift focus toward the additional corridor improvements.

City staff will present the current status of the project to the council to receive direction as they continue to coordinate with the Texas Department of Transportation and the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The goal is to incorporate the planned enhancements into the broader corridor project. Further details regarding the specific scope of the at-grade crossing or the exact allocation of city funds are not yet clear.
