A study conducted by Southern Methodist University reveals that fully autonomous vehicles have the potential to decrease traffic delays across the Dallas-Fort Worth region by as much as 33 percent, without the need for new highway lanes. This finding is particularly relevant for Princeton, Texas, located approximately 40 miles northeast of Dallas.
The research, led by Khaled Abdelghany from SMU's Stephanie and Hunter Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanity, utilized traffic modeling funded in part by the region's council of governments. The study ran 25 experiments simulating traffic conditions in 2045, testing various levels of autonomous vehicle adoption.
In scenarios where all vehicles were driverless, delays were reduced by up to 33 percent, and time spent in congested traffic decreased by at least 19 percent.
The study highlights that human drivers often contribute to traffic congestion through inconsistent driving behavior. "Autonomous vehicles may help mitigate these effects through smoother and more coordinated driving," Abdelghany stated.
Currently, Texas is at the forefront of developing the driverless vehicle industry. Aurora Innovation initiated commercial driverless deliveries between Dallas and Houston in April 2025, marking the first such service in the United States. The trucks operate along the I-45 corridor, which is a major freight route in Texas, and Aurora plans to expand its operations further.
In addition to Aurora, several other companies, including Kodiak Robotics and Waymo Via, are also advancing autonomous trucking in Texas. On the passenger side, Waymo has been operating a paid robotaxi service in Austin and has recently expanded its service to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
While the advent of driverless vehicles raises questions about job displacement, industry experts suggest that the nature of work will change rather than disappear. Positions will still be necessary for vehicle maintenance, remote monitoring, and logistics operations. Estimates indicate that the autonomous vehicle sector could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and create around 9 million jobs globally by 2030.
However, the study's 33 percent reduction figure is based on a scenario where every vehicle on the road is autonomous, which is not expected to be the case in the near term. Research from MIT suggests that a significant portion of autonomous vehicle operation occurs without passengers, which could counteract some of the anticipated congestion benefits.
