Both candidates for Texas governor posted their largest fundraising totals of the campaign in the last full reporting period before the Nov. 3 election, according to reports filed Monday and reviewed by The Texas Tribune.
From Sept. 25 through Oct. 24, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott raised $26 million and spent $35.8 million. Democrat Gina Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin, raised $17.5 million and spent $19.1 million. These were the final regular reports before Election Day; donations received in the last week will be disclosed daily.
Where the money came from
Nearly one-fifth of Abbott's latest total came from Elon Musk, the Tribune reported. Other large checks included $2.5 million from Nike co-founder Phil Knight, $2 million from investment manager Kenneth Fisher and $3 million from the Republican Governors Association. Several donors gave $500,000 each, among them Fort Worth billionaire Lee Bass and Houston businessman John Nau.
Hinojosa's top donors in the period included Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and the Democratic Governors Association, which gave $1 million each. The Democratic Senate campaign committee also paid for just under $1.5 million in canvassing and campaign materials.
