Mets Take the Lead
The New York Mets defeated the Texas Rangers 6-3 on Wednesday, September 23, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The final score reflected a game where defensive miscues played a pivotal role in shifting momentum. Attendance at the venue reached 24,191 as the two clubs competed for a significant series point.
Scoring Sequence
The Mets struck first in the third inning when Juan Soto singled to center field, allowing Francisco Alvarez to score and bringing the away team ahead 1-0. The Rangers answered immediately in the bottom of the third as Jung doubled to right, scoring Jansen to tie the game at 1-1.
The fourth inning saw both teams trade blows. An error allowed Benge to score, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead, though Alvarez was safe at first on a fielding error by right fielder Nimmo. The Mets retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Nimmo to make it 2-2.
Langford then hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Duran to give New York a 3-2 advantage.
Closing the Game
In the sixth inning, the Mets capitalized on offensive production. Alvarez doubled to center, scoring Semien and Benge to extend the lead to 5-3. Torrens followed with a sacrifice fly to first, allowing Alvarez to score and push the margin to 6-3. The Rangers added an insurance run in the seventh when Benge doubled to right, scoring Baty, though the Mets held the lead for the rest of the game.
Pitching and Records
Sean Manaea earned the win, pitching six innings while allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out nine batters and walked two. Nate Lavender, Dedniel Nunez, and Kodai Senga each pitched one inning without allowing a hit or an earned run, with Senga saving the game.
For the Rangers, MacKenzie Gore pitched five innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Nathan Eovaldi took the loss, pitching one inning and allowing three hits and three earned runs. Robert Garcia, Jakob Junis, and Peyton Gray also appeared in relief.
The Mets improved their record to 72-85, while the Rangers fell to 78-79.
