A Narrow Victory in Austin
The Texas Longhorns survived a dramatic second half to defeat the Ole Miss Rebels 34-27 on Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Despite building a commanding 21-point lead, Texas weathered a furious comeback attempt by the visiting Rebels to improve their record to 5-2. The loss drops Ole Miss to an identical 5-2 mark.
Early Dominance and Late Collapse
The game began with defensive struggles and field goal exchanges before Texas seized control. Arch Manning provided the spark in the first quarter, caping a drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown that gave the Longhorns a 10-3 advantage after half-time field goals by Gianni Spetic and Lucas Carneiro.
Texas extended its lead significantly in the second quarter. Manning connected with Ryan Wingo on a 50-yard pass for a touchdown, pushing the score to 17-3. Shortly after, Michael Terry III rushed in from two yards out, making it 24-3 at halftime. The Longhorns appeared poised for a comfortable win, holding a 21-point cushion.
However, the momentum shifted entirely in the third quarter. Ole Miss capitalized on a fumble recovery by Kam Franklin to cut the deficit to 24-10. Trinidad Chambliss led the Rebels' offense effectively in the second half, throwing two touchdown passes to Horatio Fields—one from six yards and another from 27 yards—to tie the game at 24-24 late in the fourth quarter.
