The Houston Texans have decided to suspend contract discussions with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the regular season commences. General manager Nick Caserio indicated that if an agreement is not finalized prior to the team's opening game against Buffalo on September 13, negotiations will be postponed until the following offseason.
Stroud, who was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option activated, ensuring his contract with the team runs through 2027. Although Caserio had previously mentioned the potential for an extension before the season, no agreement is currently in place.
At just 24 years old, Stroud boasts a record of 28-18 and has guided the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his first three seasons. He was honored as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and achieved a career-high completion rate of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 record and a divisional playoff spot.
Despite his successes, Stroud encountered difficulties in the postseason, including five interceptions during a 28-16 defeat to New England. Further information on future negotiations remains undisclosed.
