TCU Athletics has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a dispute that arose after the newspaper reported on an incident in the locker room. The conflict began when TCU revoked the outlet's access following coverage of an altercation that led to the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields.
On September 4, TCU announced that access had been restored, attributing the resolution to productive discussions between both parties. The university emphasized its respect for the Star-Telegram as an independent news source and its commitment to moving forward with the upcoming season. Jim Barnes, a representative from TCU, confirmed on social media that reporter Steven Johnson and his team have regained their full credentials.
The dispute originated from a report published by Johnson on August 18, which detailed tensions in the locker room and alleged that coaches failed to address the situation adequately. The report indicated that head coach Sonny Dykes was unaware of the severity of the issues among players.
Following the publication, TCU officials cited threats against sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who was punched by Fields, as the reason for revoking credentials.
The incident occurred on August 13, with Ezukanma claiming in an Instagram video that Fields punched him, causing serious injury. Fields was subsequently charged with aggravated assault and turned himself in to Tarrant County police on August 30. He was released after posting a $50,000 bond. During the credential suspension, Johnson covered TCU's season opener from the stands in Dublin, Ireland.
