Head volleyball coach Sam Erger of Southern Methodist University (SMU) received a two-game suspension for an impermissible communication, as reported by a university representative. This self-imposed suspension by SMU Athletics occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured wins against Colorado State and UC Davis. Notably, sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis achieved a significant milestone, recording 22 kills and 14 digs in a match against Colorado State. Erger returned to coach the team on September 2 in a match against TCU, where the Mustangs were narrowly defeated in five sets.
In that game, Davis again led the team with 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija made a promising debut with 13 kills.
Since taking over as head coach in February 2022, Erger has guided the SMU volleyball program to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. Last season, the Mustangs matched the program record with 27 wins.
Next, the Mustangs are scheduled to compete against the University of San Diego, with the match available for streaming on ESPN+. The specifics of the communication violation remain undisclosed due to NCAA confidentiality rules.
