The SMU Mustangs are set to enhance their wide receiver lineup with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This change comes following the loss of their top two receivers from the previous season, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before graduating.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has stepped in and highlighted Smith's capacity for contested catches and Hale's speed and agility. Hale, a former five-star recruit, is returning to form after a knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season.

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as assets to the team's strategy. Smith, with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from his previous school, brings an aggressive style that fits well with the Mustangs' passing game.

Senior Yamir Knight and sophomore Jalen Cooper are also expected to contribute significantly as the team prepares for the season opener against Florida State on September 7.

Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward commented on the competitive spirit that Hale and Smith have introduced, which is improving the overall performance of the team as they build chemistry ahead of the upcoming season.
