WACO, Texas — DJ Lagway, a quarterback who encountered numerous challenges at the University of Florida, is now starting anew at Baylor University. After a tough season that included a disappointing performance against LSU, where he threw five interceptions, Lagway's mental health suffered, leading his mother, Nikita, to come to his aid.

Upon her arrival, she found him in distress, expressing feelings of abandonment. Nikita reassured him, stating, "God's got you," while Lagway felt lost, saying, "I think God forgot about me." Following a difficult 2025 season marked by injuries and mistakes, he chose to transfer back to Texas, where he has family connections and a past with Baylor.

In Waco, Lagway has reconnected with head coach Dave Aranda, who acknowledged the emotional struggles he faced. During an honest discussion, Lagway shared his frustrations about his time in Gainesville, which Aranda noted as a pivotal moment for Lagway's mental state. He describes life in Waco as "slower" and is grateful for the change.

As he prepares for the season opener against Auburn, Lagway aims to move past his previous challenges and demonstrate his potential on the field with the Bears. The upcoming season poses questions about which version of Lagway will emerge: the promising recruit or the player who faced difficulties at Florida.
