The Dallas Cowboys are weighing several roster decisions before their season opener at the New York Giants. Israel Abanikanda is moving up from the practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury requiring surgery. Abanikanda is expected to serve as Dallas’ third running back.
Emari Demercado, claimed off waivers from Kansas City, is set to back up Javonte Williams. Davis had been behind Williams during training camp while competing with Jaydon Blue, whom Dallas waived at the end of the preseason. Fullback Hunter Luepke also remains on the roster.
The Dallas-New York game has an over-under of 48.5 points. Nick Harris selected Dallas to win and forecast a final score below that mark, pointing to the Cowboys’ experience, opening week and possible weather. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said DeMarvion Overshown will handle much of the defensive communication through the helmet, though other players are ready for changes tied to different defensive packages.
Dallas is also considering offensive-line options, according to the source. Veteran tackle D.J. Humphries became available after Washington released him.
Arizona drafted him 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter in 2016 before injuries affected his time with the Cardinals through 2023. A report said Ryan Flournoy’s contract gives Dallas flexibility in 2027: it calls for a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration.
