Enzo Panozzo has been named a co-recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s defensive weekly award after SMU defeated NC State 1-0. The conference made the announcement Tuesday, and SMU Athletics reported that Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly shared the recognition.
Panozzo, a senior from Sarasota, Florida, served as SMU’s defensive captain in its first ACC home game and scored the only goal. The Mustangs limited NC State to eight shots, with two reaching the target, while earning their fifth shutout of the season. This is Panozzo’s first weekly honor from the conference, while SMU has collected two ACC weekly awards this season.
The win moved SMU to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Mustangs have a 7-0-1 overall record and are 2-0-0 in conference competition. Their next ACC match is scheduled for Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
