The Cowboys signed veteran Emari Demercado for running-back depth and special-teams work after Malik Davis suffered a season-ending hip injury. Davis was placed on injured reserve following surgery later that night and will miss the season.
Davis was hurt Friday at The Star in Frisco during an outdoor practice that involved no contact and was only a small step beyond a walk-through. He was removed from the field by cart. Before the injury, he had won the No. 2 running-back job behind Javonte Williams after competing for it through most of August.
His training-camp and preseason performances had positioned him to contribute in Dallas’ Sunday game against the Giants.
Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that the injury was disappointing for Davis and the team. Jones said Davis had worked his way into the backup spot and that other players would now be needed. Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, also could see more opportunities.
Dallas may move him to the active roster or bring him up for the game.
