BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to join the Oklahoma Sooners. This commitment follows a three-season tenure at SMU after a brief stint at the University of Tennessee, where he participated in just 14 games before transferring through the NCAA portal.
Edwards is set to benefit from an additional year of eligibility due to a recent five-for-five temporary injunction affecting the 2022 recruiting class.
During his time in Dallas, he played under two different head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield, and remained a key player despite coaching changes. Last season was particularly strong for Edwards, as he appeared in 28 games while averaging 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, all while battling injuries.
His defensive prowess earned him All-Conference defensive team recognition, with averages of 2.4 steals in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals in the 2025-2026 season.
While SMU aimed to keep him on the roster, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser at Oklahoma. The Sooners are looking to enhance their lineup after a 21-16 season and missing the NCAA Tournament, and Edwards’ addition is seen as a significant improvement for the team heading into the winter season.
