Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, spent three days in the hospital due to a brain bleed and a concussion stemming from an alleged attack by teammate Jacob Fields at the Walsh Athletic Complex on August 13. Reports indicate that Fields was dissatisfied with Ezukanma's practice performance and allegedly struck him in the head while he was seated and looking at his phone.
Witnesses noted that Fields then kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, causing him to lose consciousness.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization after initial scans confirmed a brain bleed, which led to his transfer to the ICU. During his stay, multiple CT scans were conducted, revealing that the hematoma had increased in size. He was released from the hospital on August 16, also suffering from a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was removed from the TCU team on August 18, later surrendering to law enforcement and facing charges for aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He was released on a $50,000 bond. Following the incident, Fields sent a text message to TCU police expressing regret, mentioning that he acted out of emotion and offered to pay for Ezukanma's medical expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked that the event was atypical for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a graduate of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver this season, with TCU's next game scheduled against Grambling on September 12.
