Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer mentioned that Howell was marginally leading in the competition, yet acknowledged Milton's considerable progress. He stated that the training camp competition is very close, with Howell perhaps having a slight advantage.
The choice to retain either two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster complicates matters, as keeping three could require cuts in other areas where the team seeks depth. Howell's contract is fully guaranteed at $2.5 million for the year, meaning the Cowboys would incur that cost even if they let him go.
