The Dallas Cowboys have announced the waiver of quarterback Joe Milton. This decision was made on Monday as the team adjusted its roster in preparation for the upcoming season. Milton joined the Cowboys in April 2025 after being acquired from the New England Patriots in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick.
He had been in competition for the backup quarterback position with Sam Howell throughout the offseason.
In a related move, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which required the team to release Milton to make room on the 53-man roster. During the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had previously expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as backup options. Milton had noted his growing comfort with the team's offense, emphasizing the significance of understanding the playbook. With Milton's exit, the Cowboys' quarterback lineup now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell.
