The Dallas Cowboys reportedly signed running back Tyler Goodson on Tuesday, adding an option after backup Malik Davis sustained a hip injury that requires surgery and will end his season. The move comes as Dallas reshapes its running back group.
Goodson, 25, spent the previous three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 33 games. He had 54 carries for 264 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt, and played 304 special teams snaps over the last two seasons. That work could help fill the special teams role Davis will leave open. Goodson is listed at 5 feet 9 inches and 200 pounds.
Against the Giants, Emari Demercado was Dallas’ No. 2 running back and carried twice for 7 yards behind Javonte Williams. Williams had 12 of the Cowboys’ 18 rushing attempts, along with five receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Goodson entered the NFL undrafted with Green Bay in 2023, was released before joining Indianapolis, then moved through Atlanta’s training camp and practice squad before Dallas signed him. In his final Iowa season, he produced 1,151 rushing yards and six touchdowns, earned All-Big Ten recognition and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds.
Israel Abanikanda had been brought up from the practice squad for Week 1, and the signing’s effect on his status was unclear. Sports.yahoo.com reported the move, citing Houston television reporter Aaron Wilson.
