Dallas will host Washington next Sunday after losing its 2026 opener to the New York Giants, 28-20. The Cowboys were flagged eight times for 85 yards, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team fell short of its standard while making execution mistakes involving younger players.
New York received a strong performance from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who threw for 230 yards and gained 54 on the ground. Dallas struggled when Dart left the pocket, allowing him to prolong plays and find more space. Schottenheimer said the coaching staff needs to improve, while inexperienced players must progress quickly.
Dallas also gave up points through a discipline mistake. A taunting penalty on Javonte Williams after a touchdown forced Brandon Aubrey to try the ensuing extra point from a more distant spot. Schottenheimer said both coaches and players were responsible for the errors.
Dak Prescott finished 22 of 34 for 175 yards, with touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb and Williams. Williams also scored on a run, but the offense could not make up the difference. Schottenheimer called the loss humbling and said Dallas started poorly on offense and defense.
The Cowboys had surrendered an NFL-best 30.1 points per game in 2025 and entered the season with new defensive personnel. No further preparation details were provided.
