A defense attorney for Jacob Fields, a former TCU football player, claims the coaching staff was aware of rising tensions before a locker room altercation occurred on August 13. Fields is facing charges of aggravated assault after allegedly injuring his teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who required hospitalization for three days due to a brain bleed.
Attorney Coby DuBose contests the arrest warrant affidavit's assertion that Fields sucker-punched Ezukanma, arguing instead that Fields approached Ezukanma to greet him before the incident escalated. DuBose further asserts that Fields had communicated his frustrations about rough treatment during practices to the coaching staff, emphasizing that he had expressed being tired of "cheap shots."
DuBose believes that the coaching staff did not take the situation seriously and could have intervened to avert the fight. He described the events leading up to the altercation as exceeding typical football roughness, mentioning instances of spitting and illegal hits. Supporting DuBose's claims, Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, noted the presence of unnecessary aggression during practices.
