The Mercer County Extension Council will honor Princeton artist Hector Garcia with the Show Me Art Month Youth Art Award. The statewide recognition is administered through the University of Missouri Extension and highlights creative contributions that benefit local communities.
Garcia, 15, has completed 12 murals across Mercer County over the last two years. His artwork depicts the region’s agricultural heritage, history, and community pride, aiming to transform public spaces and strengthen local connections.
The award is one of several categories presented annually through the Show Me Art Month initiative. Other honors include regional winners, Judges’ Choice, and Best of Show. The program recognizes artists from across Missouri for work that improves quality of life and preserves community identity.
Local advocate Shelly Bickel nominated Garcia for the honor after supporting his artistic development. She encouraged his talent and helped create opportunities for him to share his creativity with others.
Jen Osborn, an Extension Engagement Specialist with MU Extension, stated that Garcia’s work demonstrates how young people can strengthen their communities. She noted that his murals honor rural Missouri’s history and serve as a lasting reminder of individual impact.
