Melissa Officer on Leave After Fatal Shooting During Disturbance Call

A Melissa police officer is on administrative leave after fatally shooting an armed man during a response to a home disturbance Sunday night.

A Melissa law enforcement officer has been placed on leave following a fatal shooting that occurred during a call for service on Sunday evening. The incident took place at a residence located on the 2600 block of East Melissa Road, where the town is situated approximately 9 miles northwest of Princeton.

According to the Melissa Police Department, dispatchers received a report of a disturbance at the home around 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers encountered an armed individual and another person inside the residence. During the encounter, one officer discharged his weapon.

The armed man sustained gunshot wounds and received first aid at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. Police confirmed that the man later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released to the public.

No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The department has not provided details regarding the nature of the disturbance or the specific circumstances that led to the use of deadly force.

The involved officer is currently on routine administrative leave while the department conducts an internal review of the shooting. Additionally, the Texas Rangers have taken over a separate criminal investigation into the incident.

Due to the ongoing nature of both investigations, police stated that no further information will be released at this time.
