The rapid growth of data centers in North Texas is creating a significant demand for skilled electricians and HVAC technicians. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central workforce regions will require nearly 3,000 additional electricians by 2032, marking a 15% increase from 2026 staffing levels. This surge is largely driven by the construction of data centers that are essential to support artificial intelligence's increasing need for computing power.
In Texas, at least 248 data centers are planned, with 86 located in North Texas, making the region a national hub for this buildout. These facilities are known for their high electricity consumption, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has noted that they account for a majority of the new electricity demand. ERCOT anticipates that statewide demand could reach approximately 368 gigawatts by 2032.
The labor shortage is not limited to electricians; there is also a growing need for HVAC specialists. Reports indicate that workers on data-center projects earn about a third more than those on typical construction sites. With a significant number of skilled tradespeople nearing retirement and insufficient younger workers entering the field, the competition for these positions is expected to intensify, creating opportunities for young North Texans considering careers in the trades.
